Warren: There are Google links to both the slab and Long's on the home page. I hope this helps.

Hello new friends. Could some one give me simple directions from Austin to both Long's Fish and Dig and the Slab? I know there's a map here to Longs but I'm having trouble orienting it. I've also seen where the Slab is located below but couldn't find those County Roads on my map. Drove up last weekend (in the rain, go figure) and couldn't find either. Any help greatly appreciated! BTW - I did talk to Mr. Long and he is open year round. Only his pasture (for digging arrowheads) is closed during Deer Season.

As some of you know Katrina and I went to the Crater Of Diamonds this past Saturday. It had rained Monday and drizzled all day Friday, so it was muddy. The weather man had said temps in the 70`s and sunshine. Well, as usual he didn`t know what he was talking about. So, I went there with nothing more than tennis shoes. Lets just say we both got pretty dirty. When it`s muddy you have to screen ALL of your material in a big wash tub thingy(Don`t remember the correct term). Anyway, I had to shovel mud into a bucket and carry it through the mud to the wash bay. Not fun. I thought this was going to be easier than Gold Prospecting. Boy was I ever wrong. We didn`t find any large stones. I have some screened cons I have to lay out and dry to see if there is any small stones in it. The surface soil did dry a little towards the end of the day so I was able to screen some of that which was a hundred times easier. I`ll let you all know if I find any. All in all it was a pretty neat place. Very strange though that the dirt was green. Thought about bringing some back to use as face paint while hunting. John, all they allow you to bring out is two handfulls of unworked material, so I didn`t bring you any back. The weird thing is that they will let you bring back a full bucket of washed material per person. We both had a great time and learned some new things.

I think this is the size breakdown of classsifer screen (mesh) sizes : 1/2 inch about 4 holes per square inch 1/4 inch about 16 holes per square inch 1/8 inch about 64 holes per square inch 1/12 inch about 144 holes per square inch 1/20 inch about 400 holes per square inch
- - Grif
- Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at 11:08:51 (EST)
I use an 1/8 or 1/12 inch size classifier (aka "8" or "12"). I've used a 1/4 before, but chances of gold that size is rare and I elect to go smaller (8,12,20...)and run less water volume...plus, my bucket doesn't fill up as fast. I'll post mesh sizes next. Good luck!

- Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at 11:05:57 (EST)
Phil, I would recommend sub 1/4". I've run my DFS copy with sub 1/2" and it appeared to work o.k.
Daniel
- Monday, December 11, 2006 at 19:09:18 (EST)
Daniel & Grif - thanks for the sluice info! Grif - how fine should the classifier be before feeding the DFS? Finer than the coarse 1/2 in. that came with my Garrett pan kit I'm sure.
Phil
- Monday, December 11, 2006 at 15:52:49 (EST)
Phil, I can attest to the DFS sluice. I've owned one now for 2 years and I love it. It's a great thing to see and use when it is setup correctly. The material will peel back in layers and its fun to watch. If its NOT setup correctly in the stream, it's a great thing for OTHER prospectors because the TX fine gold will blow on out. Two tips: Low flow and classification.
- - Grif
- Monday, December 11, 2006 at 02:00:15 (EST)
Phil, your best bet is a DFS type sluice. The gold is pretty small...better recovery without the riffles. The only problem is the amount of black sand. You'll have to clean out the sluice often.
Daniel
- Saturday, December 09, 2006 at 14:27:17 (EST)
Thanks for replies to my newbie questions! Another one... what type hand sluice is most appropriate for the type gold most likely found in the Llano? A "standard" hand sluice such as a Keene A51/A52 or JOBE Yellow Jacket Stream Sluice, or something that is designed specfically to trap fine gold like the Damn Fine Sluice?

I have some bad news to relay. Todd Pickens' house burned down this week. Todd, Laural and their 2 sons have lost everything. Please consider helping them out with a gift card donation. I have posted Earl's email address on the home page if you want to make a donation. Losing everything is unimaginable. Please help them out.

Hi - Just getting interested in prospecting. During reasearch on the web I came across the following on LCRA's site: http://www.lcra.org/asklcra/august.html#3 Q: I would like to pan for gold in the Llano River. Do I need some type of permit to do this? A: You will need a permit from the Texas General Land Office. Call the GLO in Austin at (512) 463 5001. Is this correct - a GLO permit is needed to pan at "The Slab" or Long's?? Thanks

Hey Gerry...glad to hear your modifications are working! If you think you were in someone tailings and found "grains", then it's picking up what other equipment blew out! Either way, it's a great day the minute you get out there, gold or no gold...good sampling techniques just help make it an outstanding day. Take care.

- Saturday, November 18, 2006 at 01:08:26 (EST)
Hi Mark, & anyone else who may be interested, After working thru my cons from the last outing I found so few grains I did not even bother to sniffer them up! I begean to suspect something was wrong wqhen I did not find any shotgun pellets in the 30 or 40 mesh screens. I had found a lot in the same place previously. The explanation I think is that someone else had worked the hole out before us. There were some tailings to be seen, which I thought were my own from some 4 months previously when I did some highbanking at the spot. The lesson here is "not to ignore the basics - sample before you waste an entire day worknig over the wrong place" !

Hey All, it was good seeing everyone again at the outing, wish I could of stayed longer. Tommy, thanks for the vote of confidence, but I think you're learning what I'm doing and doing just the opposite...that's why you're finding it! The next lesson is: "A miner that says he ain't finding any gold is probably finding it... whereas one that says he is finding it is probably lying". So get with the program cuz I saw the gold you found ;-) Take care everyone! Got truck, will prospect!

Hi Everyone, If you want to read of an exciting trip, see the $49'ers newsletter on www.goldgold.com/newsletterlatest/htm; scroll down to find the words "week long projects" in yellow and underlined. There is also a schedule of 2007 events. This outing seems to me to be a very good alternative to an Alaska trip. Anyone keen ? - lets discuss it.

I wanted to thank everyone for the outing this past weekend. Katrina and I had a great time. The food and the company was great. As some of you know I`m creaping up on a years worth of prospecting experience, so I`m still pretty new to it. But, I did learn a few things during our make shift camp fire Saturday night. We just wanted to thank all of you for a wonderful time. I hope we can do it again soon. Oh, one more thing...I have to say that John "The Griff" has taught me almost everything I know about prospecting. But the funny thing about that is that it seems like I find more gold than he does. Guess that will teach you not to buy a truck on an outing weekend again. LOL... Anyway, thanks again and hope to see all of you soon.

Hi all my fellow members of GPAA and Round Rock chapter. Went to Malcolm's as I had planned and had the place almost entirely to myself. Worked gathering rocks and material to bring home. Did some panning while there and got lots of good black sand. Found 2 specs of gold while panning. Been home a couple of days now and have panned out some more material. Got about a penny weight of fine flour gold so far. Looks like this trip is going to turn out as a real good gold producer. Haven't gotten into grinding up the rocks from the trip yet. Only been washing them and panning out the loose material. Be real interesting to see what the rocks produce. Hoping to make another trip to Malcolm's before the end of the year. It is beginning to look like the spots to find gold are being located there. Should make for better outings and more gold found by everyone. Was wondering if there will be an October meeting. Want to bring along the gold I find from this trip and some ground up rock for some of you fellow prospectors to pan out. Welcome to all you new folks that are just getting started. May you find the gold to satify that "Fever" and fill your pans. Randy Asterman "Rockbreaker" mvoygr1@satx.rr.com

Hi Paul, welcome to the "illness" we all share...Gold fever, and we welcome you to the club! Texas does have small quantities of gold in and around the Llano and Presidio counties (central and far west TX respectively). I never like to rule out other places in TX, but towards Houston, I've only heard tell that Bastrop may have some very small quantities. Best advice? Come to one of our meetings and/or group outings (details on home page), join the GPAA, and practice panning! Where to go can be complicated, but information can be found about that below. I'm no expert (yet) so others, please chime in. Hope to prospect with you soon!

Looking at joining both the GPAA and RR Chapter. Several of my friends and I get a kick out of watching the shows on the Outdoor Channel, and we've become obsessed with finding gold in Texas (just strikes us as pretty cool). Are there mining locations near Round Rock or do you guys travel long distances? None of us have any experience at this, it just looks like a fun, different thing to do, and we'd kinda like to know what we're getting into. Are there any claims closer to Houston? Is anything required other than a shovel and a pan? Complete newbies here..... Any info/help would be appreciated.

Jerry, Take a piece and put it ona hard surface. put the tip of your pocket knife on it and push hard. If it breaks, it's pyrite. If it didn't break, take a hammer and lightly tap on it a few times. Does it break or flatten out, get larger and thinner? Then it's metallic and a good chance you have gold. Failing that, you can always send a piece or two thru the mail to someone expereinced who can tell you if it's gold or not, or you can take it to a club meeting, or if you don't want to reply on strangers you can ue the GPAA's free visual assay available to members. Just send your sample to them, they'll do an visual assay only, no chemical or fire assays, and let you know. If I can help email me for my addy and I'd be happy to tell you gold or not. Phil hope this helps.

Am a very new member to the GPAA...I don't really know anything about prospecting except what I have read and watched on the outdoor channel. I found some crushed granite the other day, saw alot of color, but figured it was fools gold but took samples anyway, thinking that if it was fools gold, I could practice...well now I'm not too sure if its fools gold. Can anyone tell me some home tests that will remove all doubt? I have performed a float test, the flakes sink very very quickly. I performed the magnet test using the gold separator magnet that came with my startup kit made by the Massie Brothers.....the magnet didnt pick up anything, flakes or the fine flour. and the last test I tried was pressure, I grew up crushing and breaking alot of mica/pyrite, the flake I tested wtih my fingernail didnt break, it bent and stayed bent, then I tried the same using tweezers, trying to snap it, again it only bent. is there some final "Fer Sure" test I can use to tell if this is fools gold or real? I am sitting on pins and needles here!!!!!!! Thank you.

Hi all. Been reading the messages and have gotten a lot of good info from them. I am planning on going to Longs 14-18 Sep and do some prospecting. Will be taking along a couple of my assembled rock grinders for sale. Asking $60.00 for them. Make them by hand and they do the job. Recently got a 50 mesh classifier and get that sized material out of the grinder fairly easily. Some may even be smaller but that is the samllest I can classify. Have found a few specs in the 50 mesh material but still have about half a bucket to pan out. Hope to see some of you out at Longs in Sep. Email me at mvoygr1@satx.rr.com to let me know if you are going to be there. This isn't a chapter outing but just me going there. Hope you all have great days ahead. May your pans always be filled with gold. Randy "Rockbreaker" Asterman

Hello Randy and Albert. The Main Page on this website has links to both "The Slab" and Malcome Long's Fish and Dig. They are very close to each other just outside of Kingsland. Malcome's is a pay to dig and the slab is public and open to panning and sluicing. Good luck!

I don`t remember who it was, but I told someone next time I went to Longs I would let them know on here. (Give me a break. I`m getting old.) So, Katrina and I and maybe John "The Grif" will be at Longs this Friday and Saturday. I bought a Minelab Eureka Gold, so now I have to try and figure out how to use it. Thank you for the meeting. To the leader, I was wrong clorine will leach gold. And to copier man the "Basement chemistry for the prospector" talks about this and 3 other halides to put gold insolution besides cyanide(HCN). To Swiss man & Colorado man & others I really enjoyed the information and your technical knowledge.

Hi there Jerry, Your work schedule is a problem that is likely to interfere with your prospecting alongside most other GPAA members! However,I am a retired guy, so I have more flexibility. If you would like to meet at the Llano prospecting site sometime during the week,I can show you around, and discuss some of the techniques and equipment used, and the GPAA set-up. Give me a ring on 512 394-0192. I'm from Austin, so would be coming from the south; you are to the north-east, so we cannot conveniently share a vehicle. You would need to come south to Burnet; west along 29 to the junction with 1431; south along 1431 to the outskirts of Kingsland(marked by a flashing yellow traffic light) where you turn right(west)into 3404. Proceed to the Llano river crossing - park legally on the east bank. Hope to meet you there sometime. Gerry Davison

Hello Round Rockers, found your site by poking around when I got interested in prospecting after watching the outdoor channel, after reading your message board, I don't know if my wife and I could become members or not, see...I work EVERY weekend,12 hour shifts....have for the last 9 years. So I think I might be startin off with me, myself, and I....Dumb question, is there really gold in Texas? Reason I ask is cause everywhere I have researched for our area, I cant even get books on the subject!! we are in Copperas Cove just about 7 miles West of Fort Hood. Fort Hood is totally off limits cause of the antiquities law, you cant even break out your metal detector. We do have the Lampassas River just a few miles down the road, any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Well,I just returned tonight from a weekend in Kerrville. Spent Saturday on the Guadalupe River next to the city park, metal detecting and panning, with no luck. It's amazing that their was not even any black sand in that area. The area is nothing but river rock and God only knows how deep it is to bedrock. I remember seeing on your site, that one guy had dredged some nice nuggets out of this river, but probably not in the area that I was in. If you plan to work this river, I would suggest further West, possibly on the North Fork, past Hunt. I am from Victoria and only get that far North about twice a year, so please keep us updated on your good and bad locations. Thanks to everyone involved in this chapter for all you do. I used my sluice box for the first time and he showed me just how to set it up. I found one visible piece, and about five not so visible pieces. John, I didn`t find anymore in the black sand I brought home. I would like to get down there one more time before the outing so I can check out Longs. Hello Round Rockers! I met a few of you a couple of weeks ago at the Llano River. I`m sorry I can`t remember all of your names, but I think it was Kevin that was just upstream from us. Katrina and I had a great time and found one nice flake that you took a picture of, and eight to ten smaller ones. I was thinking about coming back this weekend on Saturday if anyone is going to be there. Does anyone know what the water will be doing this weekend? Will five days be enough for it to calm down? I`ll try and remember everyones name a little better this time. Once I found that nice flake, I forgot everything. Thanks, Tommy Groves

Hi Jwhat, I may have to defer to someone more in the "know", but I'm pretty sure you don't need a permit to dredge at Longs. Also, I'm not sure about any size restrictions. Way to go Kevin! 22 colors? This guy knows what he's doing folks. I've pulled a few little specs from that spot but not many. However, I just found the biggest spec I've found from that general area this Sunday. Couldn't believe it when I saw it stuck to the outer wall of my blue-bowl.

Hey Jwhat, I have added a link to the home page which will bring up a Google map to the Slab. The Slab is where CR307 crosses over the river. There is limited parking. Be mindful of private property on either side of the river. I am working on a better page with directions to several prospecting locales. EVERYONE... Please hit the refresh button on your browsers if the link is not visible.

I will put a link on the home page with directions to the Slab. It is about the only "free" place to prospect in central Texas. Check back daily. You can use sluices, highbankers and dredges up to 4", I think. Engines must be 4 cycle, I think. I will get clarification when I put up the directions.

I'm planning to go to the slab in Kingsland on Sunday if anyone wants to go (9am-5pm/rain-or-shine). Question: When watching the Llano episode of the Gold Fever show (again), someone shows a beautiful long nugget that he says he found just walking along the path. What path? Where? Does anyone know? Was that path at Long's? Thanks!

Hey Grif, Daniel and I will be at the Slab this Saturday. The Llano Chapter will be downstream having an outing at Todd's house. If anyone wants to join in, they can meet us at the low water crossing upstream, or join the Llano bunch downstream. Directions to the crossing and Todd's house can be found on the "Texas Chapters Updates" link off of the home page.

Howdy Fishman, I've seen Randy's machine work in action and must say it will be one of the most quiet crushers you'll find. It works by grinding the material instead of crushing it. The plans are worth the five bucks for sure.

Howdy All! Just lookin at Randy A's rock stompin machine and was wondering if your keeping to just the quartz or are you working mineralized ore as well? How many buckets o' rock did it take to get that bit in the pan? I had started a project this winter to build a crusher, but put it on hold. The thing I was wondering is ...how loud is this thing during operation? I might need to put mine in the 'back 40' so to speak...

Hello All, I live in Austin and am starting to think prospecting is something I might like. I found your web site through the GPAA site. Do you still have regular monthly meetings? I ask because there haven't been any meeting minutes posted in a while. Also, I am not a GPAA member yet, can I just show up and listen? I'll check back in a few days, but feel free to email me at baronmarsh@yahoo.com

WOW - I am so glad I found this site. Gold in Texas ? Who woulda thunk it. This may be the perfect place to get the advice I need. My son will be graduating from High School this year in the Austin area and on his spring Break he wants to go gold panning. I have no clue where this came from but I thought why not. So - here is what The wife and I am looking for. 1) A place that there is a chance he might actually find something 2) A place I can drive my AWD Astro Camper right up to and do the prospecting (self contained) 3) camp there for an extended period, if it is close enough to Austin maybe 5 nights. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Email me at wilbur267@yahoo.com

Outing Report - Got there about 9:30 and Mr. & Mrs. Gerry Davison were already there...thanks for coming! We setup the highbanker/combo in a spot about a 1/2 mile up river and from initial tests of the cons, it looked like we were going to rule out another good spot were gold wasn't. But since, I've found two little specs in the magnetite alone...(Gerry, want your spec?:-) Thanks also to the prospector from the Llano chapter (didn't catch your name, sorry!)..glad you made it out, and Earl and Todd for the privilege of the claim. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Everyone!

** Day Outing ** Sunday Dec 18 at the Slab. This weekend might be a cold and wet one, but Sunday is supposed to be the better of the two so I'm heading out then. The Slab is on CR307 just outside of Kingsland on 1431. The claim owners allow for panning and sluicing (*thanks!*). All Powered equipment requires prior approval and no 2 cycle motors, so I obtained permission to bring my highbanker. I'm eyeing a spot up river from the bridge about a quarter mile...that's where I'll be around 9-10am. If for some reason I can't make it, I'll post here. Look out gold, here I come!

Hi folks, I'm going to start posting some invites to personal outings that I go on during the weekends. Usually I head to Long's, but I'll post here ahead of time in case anyone wants to join me or make suggestions. Hi James, welcome! Nuggets are going to be scarce around these parts. However, there's specks and flower gold to be found, it's just getting to them thats the hard part. Texas has very little public lands and what there is, has claims on them and you'll need permission from the owners. The best advise I could give is: -Come to a couple of our meetings -Sign up for the email updates on the "Join" page for instant updates and news. -Join our club of good and like-minded people that share the same quest as you. Several times throughout the year we have "outings" and along with the meetings, are great opportunities to get advice, knowledge, where to go, what to use, etc... -Longs Fish & Dig outside of Marble Falls is a good place to pay to dig. Hope to prospect with you soon!

I have 2 items I want to sell. One is a Keene mini gold dredge that I bought maybe 20 years ago. It normally sits on an inner tube as it runs and sucks gravel off the bottom. The inner tube is gone, it has a sluice that the materials wash down and the hoses seem to be intact. The little two-cycle engine has not been started in many years of storage in my garage, but I guess it would probably work good after it got a good cleaning. The engine was never underwater and I probably only used it three or four weekends in the Llano area. I did send a note to Keene about a year ago and asked if parts were available and they told me I could still get parts, although I never tried. The second item is a small Keene dry washer that I used to carry on my backpack frame. It is pretty simple to operate, you just dump some dry material on it and jerk the bellows rope to blow away the lighter material. I would be happy to let anyone look at these. My email is charleyf@yahoo.com . I can also be reached at 512-797-2007 cell, and 512-836-3948 home.

I just wanted to tell everyone that I really enjoyed your booth at the GPAA show this last weekend. I traveled down to go to the show and got my sister and her husband to go with me Sunday - what fun we had panning at your booth. My sister found the piece of platinum and she had so much fun panning that on Monday she joined GPAA. When you have an outing later this year I'm hoping to drive down again to visit with her and we will go to the outing. Thanks for the great fun at the show. I am going to make a gemstone tree with the garnets that I panned. Thanks again!

Hello Damian, True..Texas has very little gold, but it's there to find. More importantly, by joining the GPAA, you're voicing your opinion by supporting a stand up organization fighting to preserve your rights to prospect for gold. Also by joining, you'll open more opportunities and places to find gold as well as make new friends with people that share the same love for it. If you like prospecting, think about joining. You can contact anyone from the "Email Us" link for more information. Good luck!
